LitterLocker is a disposal system that holds dirty cat litter and keeps smells trapped inside. The LitterLocker 2 is an older model that many people own. This article will share details about the LitterLocker 2, how to use it, and where to find refills.
Litter Locker ii litter disposal system
Although a LitterLocker is more expensive than using a small trash can and small garbage bags, it is worth the money if you value a pet odor-free home.
I have both the LitterLocker and LitterLocker ii and 100% notice that it reduces litter box odors once I scoop the waste into the canister.
Is Litter Locker ii discontinued?
LitterLocker ii is discontinued, and you can no longer purchase one. But if you already own a LitterLocker the older model or have bought one secondhand, you will have no problem purchasing LitterLocker refills for the “ii” version.
LitterLocker still produces round refills for the LitterLocker ii. You can even find generic refills for the LitterLocker ii.
Litter Locker vs. Litter Locker 2
LitterLocker ii serves the same purpose as the current LitterLocker, but the size, shape, color, design, and bag cartridge shape are different. Both systems are effective at trapping odors in the canister.
Size, shape & color
The LitterLocker ii is taller than the current LitterLocker model. The new model has a sleeker shape with curved corners and rounded edges. Both versions are white with a grey lid, lever, and scoop, however, the LitterLocker ii uses a darker grey, and the scoop holder is also grey.
Design
For both the LitterLocker ii and LitterLocker, the top lid comes off to expose the bag cartridge. However, they differ when it comes to accessing the bottom part of the container.
To open the LitterLocker ii, you push in the tab on the front and tilt the top back. To open the LitterLocker, you pull the lever and simultaneously tilt the top back.
Both use a lever that pulls back and allows the waste to drop into the bottom of the container. And both models have a built-in cutter to cut the plastic tube to size.
Should I buy the newer LitterLocker?
If you already own a LitterLocker ii, I don’t see any reason to buy the newer LitterLocker Design. They’re both equally effective at holding dirty litter and trapping odors.
The only reason you might need to purchase the new design is if refill cartridges stopped being available. But as of now, LitterLocker ii refills and generic refills are available.
Litter Locker ii vs. Litter Genie Plus
LitterLoccker ii is similar to the Litter Genie Plus, but they have different looks, shapes, and sizes. They both have a tab at the front you must push in to release the top half and gain access to the bottom of the canister to change the bag.
The main difference between a LitterLocker ii and Litter Genie Plus is that the Litter Genie Plus has “added antimicrobial” that “inhibits odors caused by bacteria on the pail”. Also, the bag cartridge sold with the Litter Genie Plus has more plastic, so the cartridge lasts longer. However, once that cartridge is empty, you must buy a regular refill, which has the amount of plastic as a LitterLocker ii refill.

You can still purchase LitterLocker 2 refills here:
There are also LitterLocker 2 refill alternatives that are cheaper. This is the one I use:
Can you use LitterLocker refills in a LitterLocker ii?
No, you cannot use LitterLocker refills in a LitterLocker ii, because the refill cartridge shapes are different. Although the refills serve the same function, use a similar cartridge system, and the same type of plastic, they are not interchangeable.
The LitterLocker ii uses a round cartridge, and the LitterLocker Design and Design Plus use a square cartridge. The canisters both have a top that fits the shape of the cartridge. So although the round cartridge could technically fit within the square space the LitterLocker Design has for the cartridge, the plastic in the top of the LitterLocker is not formed to hold a round cartridge in place.
LitterLocker ii refill alternative
Here’s a hack that works well if you can’t find LitterLocker ii refills, want a cheaper alternative, or want to use biodegradable bags.
You don’t need an empty refill cartridge for this hack to work. You simply need the right size of bag.
You need a bag that is long enough it will reach the bottom of the canister and fold over the top of the LitterLocker ii. The LitterLocker ii is taller than the LitterLocker Design.
If a bag is too short, you won’t be able to use the lid to keep it in place. And as the bag fills with dirty litter, it will slip out of place.
The bag must also have a wide enough opening that it will fold over the top of the LitterLocker ii.
You don’t want a bag that’s too big though. It will create too much bulk and the lid and lever won’t be able to create a tight seal when closed.
A bag that’s too big will also result in waste; unless you fill the bag with other waste before throwing it in the trash.
Most 1.2 – 1.6 gallon / 10 – 15 litre bags will work.
The bag should be approximately 17” tall and 10” in diameter.
Choose a bag that won’t rip easily either. I prefer biodegradable bags, but you have to be careful because a lot of them are flimsy. Cat litter can become quite heavy, and you don’t want a full bag ripping and spilling cat waste.
If you’ve purchased a bag that’s too thin, try doubling it for extra strength.
Don’t use scented bags
I’d encourage you NOT to use a scented bag (e.g. Glad with Febreze). Cats have a strong sense of smell and scented products can irritate them.
If you keep your LitterLocker next to the litter box, the smell of the garbage bags could irritate them, and they may start finding another spot to go (you don’t want that).
Steps
- Lift the lid off the LitterLocker ii by pulling up on the tab at the back.
- Open the biodegradable bag, pull back on the lever and push the bottom of the bag towards the bottom of the canister.
- Fold the top of the bag over the top of the LitterLocker ii.
- Press the lid back on.
- The lid will hold the top of the bag in place so it doesn’t slide around when the lever opens and closes, or as the bag fills.
- Press that tab on the front to unlock the top part of the LitterLocker ii and tilt the top half back.
- With the lever pulled back, pull on the bottom of the plastic bag so it will sit on the bottom of the LitterLocker ii.
- Tilt the top half back and press down so the tab snaps back into place.
How to empty Litter Locker ii
To empty a LitterLocker ii, follow these steps:
- Press the tab on the front of the canister and tilt the top of the LitterLocker ii back.
- Using the built-in cutter, cut the plastic bag several inches above the waste so you will have enough plastic to tie a knot and close the bag.
- Tie a knot at the top of the bag and remove it from the canister.
- To start a new bag, pull the lever back and pull on the plastic liner to feed it towards the bottom of the canister.
- Tie a knot in the bottom of the bag and pull on the plastic until the knot will sit on the bottom of the canister.
- Tilt the top half of the LitterLocker ii back and push down until you hear it snap into place.
How to replace bags in Litter Locker ii
To replace the bags in a LitterLocker ii, follow these steps:
- Take the lid off the LitterLocker ii by pulling up on the tab at the back of the canister.
- Remove the old refill.
- Open a new refill cartridge and pull out about a foot of plastic.
- Feed the plastic through the center of the cartridge and tie a knot in the bottom.
- Place the cartridge into the top of the LitterLocker ii and press the lid back on.
- Pull the lever back and push the bag towards the bottom of the canister.
- Press the tab on the front of the canister and tilt the top half of the container back.
- Pull the lever back and pull on the plastic so the knot will sit on the bottom of the container when closed.
- Tilt the top half of the LitterLocker ii back and push down until you hear it snap into place.
